Saga Furs Auction Report

Competition among fur buyers was keen at the Saga Furs September auction as a result of heavy demand for all types of fur from various markets.

The 5-days of sales ended on Monday and marked the final auction for the 2011-12 buying season. Results of the auction, however, will be recorded in accounts for Saga Furs Oyj’s current fiscal year, which began on 1 September 2012.

“The fur industry is an exceptionally bright point in a time when most economic news is dominated by uncertainty,” says CEO Pertti Fallenius. “The industry contributes positively to Finnish and European society by exporting to newer and growing world markets, a product that demands a high degree of expertise.”

The fox offering at the September auction was lower than that of the September 2011 auction, a factor that influenced demand and the rise in prices. At this year’s auction, 630,000 mink were offered, compared with 823,000 a year earlier. The total number of fox pelts sold at the latest auction was 430,000, compared with 727,000 at the September 2011 auction. Price levels for fox and Finnraccoon pelts increased from the previous levels.

As it also was last Sept, all minks offered were breeders and no regular quality pelts were sold. The average prices of all fox sales of regular qualities amounted to 147,50 euros.

On the last selling day an offering of 133,000 Saga® Blue fox lowgrades and breeders was 100 % sold at high prices. Main buying by Hong Kong/ China.

Around 500 buyers from all world markets attended the Saga Furs September auction.

Saga Furs will begin the new sales season at the 18-21 December auction.
